It was another early morning for Alex and Morgan, so I made their burritos at 6:30 and everyone else's at 8. Did you know that it's dark at 6 a.m.?
Sausage, onions, diced potatoes, cheese, an egg and Chalula sauce. Yum! I usually add diced jalapenos, but I didn't have any. Ooh, and I should have added tomoatoes. And avacado. And green salsa...

December 5--Classic Coffee Cake
So, I'm pretty big on tradition around here. For my December breakfasts, I like to use some family recipes, but throw in some new ones now and then. However, this coffee cake is a classic. Hence, the name.
When Doug and I had been married only several weeks, I wanted to make a coffee cake for Saturday breakfast. I looked in my shiny, new Better Homes and Gardens cook book for a recipe. I couldn't find one like my mom used to make. So I called her and got her recipe from the Betty Crocker cookbook she had as a new bride. I scribbled it down on a sticky note and stuck it in my cook book. There it is to this day. True story.

I love this coffee cake and wish I had a nickel for every time I've made it over the last 20 years.
It's perfect with a glass of milk. Or coffee. Duh.

December 4--Fried Egg Sandwich
So, this one's kind of boring. But I had to come up with something to make for Alex before he went to jazz band at 7 AND something everyone else could eat at regular breakfast time. There's nothing wrong with an egg sandwich, especially when you make it with a yummy, crisp sourdough bread.

December 3--Baked Oatmeal
This is an old stand-by. I got this recipe from my sister-in-law (I still use the hand-written recipe she gave to me about 12 years ago!), who got it from a friend whose in-laws ran a cafe in town. I think that's where it came from. Anyway, it's delicious and simple. Perfect choice for a Monday morning.
Topped with vanilla yogurt and a warm strawberry sauce--it's perfect!

December 2--Butter Braid
Ok, sometimes I cheat. I didn't actually make this breakfast. Every year, someone we know is selling these butter braids. A trip to D.C., a band fundraiser, new uniforms for the football team...I don't really care what it is, I always buy one! They are so yummy. This year, I chose the blueberry-cream cheese. It did not disappoint!
Just look at that! It's so glorious in all it's flakey, golden goodness.
Maybe some year, I'll try to make my own, but for now,
as long as some kid needs a new tuba, I'll buy a butter braid.

31 Breakfasts of December
Well, long time, no blog. I do have great things going on, just not time to write about it, I guess. One of the most exciting things happening around here, aside from 2 boys learning how to drive, 2 boys playing basketball, and the usual craziness that goes with 4 kids, Venturing and longboarding, is December Breakfasts! Woo hoo! My mom did this when I was a kid, although not every year. It seems she did it starting around the mid 80's and then took a break for a while. I started when the kids were old enough to appreciate and eat a hearty breakfast, probably around 2005. So, I decided to blog about it this year. I have found some amazing recipes over the years (and some serious flops!). So I hope this inspires you to make some yummy breakfasts...
